The process takes longer and could provide what programs were most likely to have been involved during the time the Operating System error occurred. Reply Gabriel 2 years ago I solved the problem changing the cable from the hd for the cable from the cd drive, the small cable, not the energy cable. Anyway if I get that sob back I will try those other things. It will boot from the cd with the hard drive out. After I booted up it seems like something was eating up my CPU (though I didn't see anything suspecting in the resource monitor fired up using Ctrl + Alt + Delete).

Isn't that more expensive than an elevated system? For Windows 8: Same process like Windows 7 described just above. Maxtors are very unreliable, I'm surprised you have an old one. Anything after that will make the pc unable to read the drive.
