I was working on a computer that was new and I didn't have anything that needed to be preserved though. On Macs, this has usually been fairly easy, since HFS+ partitions are pretty flexible -- they'll let you add/remove/resize without a lot of hassle. They’re still there, but as buttons instead of tabs.
