Does the management console open on the local server? If you change it to autodetect it should either find the server on your network or fail to find any and not put an entry into the DNS server list. Check Active Directory to see that it is functioning properly. I have 2 servers running DNS; both are Win2k w/SP4, one primary and one secondary.

I gave up and just installed R2 and the problem went away.
