So maybe, just maybe, the DNS settings on the PS3 have made a difference. Previously it was errors of 2110 and 2101 but now im getting the 2114 error. Even though the PS3 saw the media server the PS3 was having the 2104 errors. I've now gone and ordered a couple of Solwise 200 homeplugs and a Belkin N1 Vision modem/router.

Not a very good from a security stand point I know, but desperate times call for desperate measures.
