Thanks for the tip, it was a saviour! When trying to restore the boot sector or to restore data is by using the Microsoft tools such as using the Windows CD by selecting "System Repair". Wow. Maxtors are very unreliable, I'm surprised you have an old one.

Saturday, January 12, 2008 5:11 PM 0 Sign in to vote im having the same problem yesterday my computer was working fine shut it off and now i get that error. i was sitting on the computer and suddenly it froze.  then i turned off the computer n then turned it back on n the messege came up.

im also using vista.any ideas would be great! Did I just kill it??? Then re-install the batteries and connect the AC adapter and power the laptop.  All drives should be recognizable. It turned off by itself.
